We are excited to be acknowledged for the following awards, but first our Waterton Hall Wines branding story...
The inspiration for our Shiraz label- historic architectural detailing
We’ve been busy and with a great deal of passion in all that we do with our vineyard through to our top quality wines, we would like to share our following successes…
2022 Halliday Wine Companion Results for Waterton Hall Wines, Tamar Valley, TASMANIA
2019 Viognier – 94 points Silver
“Hand picked from the 0.15ha Waterton Hall vineyard in Rowella, planted in 1999. Basket pressed; wild fermented in old oak barrels; matured on lees for 7 months with regular batonnage. The holy grail of viognier is varietal integrity with elegance and tension. This wine epitomises all 3, contrasting pristine, crunchy apricot and lemon fruit with apricot kernel and bright Tasmanian acidity. Wild fermentation in old oak barrels brings creamy texture that holds its phenolic grip comfortably through to a long finish. Well executed.”
Tyson Stelzer, published 13 August 2021.
2019 Riesling – 93 points Silver
“Hand picked fruit from 0.91ha vineyard in Rowella. Cool-fermented. Pale straw hue. A core of focused Granny Smith apple, lime and lemon is greeted by the apricot and exotic spice of botrytis from this humid site surrounded by the Tamar River. A couple of years age has added subtle roast almond complexity. Impressive line, length and focus, with the acid drive to age long.”
Tyson Stelzer, published 13 August 2021.
2019 Shiraz [20yr old vines] – 93 points Silver
“Hand picked from the Waterton Hall vineyard in Rowella, planted 1999. Matured in French oak barrels for 12 months. Twenty years may not seem a long time by Australian viticultural standards, but for Tasmanian shiraz it’s an eternity, and this is a compelling case for the virtues of vine age. By contrast to the young-vine version the effortless confidence, body, line and length infused here are worth more than an extra $5. White pepper dances over satsuma plum and black cherry fruit. A long finish is sustained by nicely textured, fine- grained tannins. Classy.”
Tyson Stelzer, published 13 August 2021.
2019 Shiraz – 90 points Silver
“Hand picked from the 0.67ha Waterton Hall vineyard in Rowella, planted 2012; matured in French oak barrels for 12 months. With a refreshingly light, vibrant purple hue, this is an excitingly white pepper-accented young-vine shiraz with cool-climate credentials. Medium bodied, it presents accurate blackberry, satsuma plum and black cherry fruit on a primary, light, simple and short palate. A refreshing summertime take on shiraz.”
Tyson Stelzer, published 13 August 2021.

The second annual Tassie Wine Stars event, a celebration of all things Tasmanian wine, was held last night at Tamar Ridge Cellar Door in Rosevears.
The event brought together Tasmanian wine producers, local wine trade and hospitality representatives along with visiting interstate wine trade guests.
At the event, the VinØ ("vin zero") Program Awards recognised the sustainability practices of two wine producers, while the Wine List of the Year Awards were awarded across three categories to Tasmanian venues prioritising and promoting local wines.
As part of Wine Tasmania’s VinØ Program, which helps wine producers measure, improve and report their sustainability and management practices, two awards were announced at the event. Southwood Wines in Kellevie was announced as the VinØ Program Most Improved Producer while Waterton Hall in the Tamar Valley is the VinØ Program Champion of 2021.
The VinØ Program is a comprehensive, user-friendly resource, focused on key areas of vineyard and winery management including soil health, biodiversity, waste and water management, biosecurity and emissions reduction.
Gold Medal at Harpers Wine & Spirit Design Awards 2017
The redesign of our beautiful brand has won a Gold Medal at Harpers Wine & Spirit Design Awards 2017 in London.
The graphic elements for each varietal are derived from historic architectural elements around our farm such as 1850s brick detailing of the stone barn and stained glass from the main homestead but brought in to the current era via modern twists. The arch on the front label depicts the arch of the loggia verandah from the main homestead and the beautiful turquoise colouring is derived from the stained glass.
